Well guys, Thanksgiving is just a few days away! I love this week. I love Thanksgiving. It is hands down my favorite holiday, for several reasons. I think I just love the simplicity of it. It’s a time to be thankful for what God has blessed us with, to spend the day with family and friends and the people that we love, and to eat some really good food. And, in my family, we celebrate the end of harvest season this time of year. It’s a signal that life on the farm is ready to slow down for a few months. Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas too, I really do, but there is just something special about Thanksgiving.
Of course there are the traditions. We always have the traditional meal…turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberries, green beans, sweet potatoes and my mom’s home made rolls. And, there is always oyster stuffing and everyone (my brother Dustin, and my cousin Colby in particular) looks forward to Aunt Bobbie’s layered yellow cake with chocolate frosting that she brings in the avocado green and white tupperware cake dish. Every year. Then, there is usually a game of football in the back yard. The annual game of football, from which we have so many legendary family stories. Then we eat a little more, and always play a few rounds of cards. Pitch. That’s our game, we always play Pitch. (By the way, is that just a mid-Missouri thing? Does anyone else out there know how to play Pitch? I’ve always wondered that. I never hear about other people playing it, but it’s the card game of choice around here.)
What are your Thanksgiving traditions? Any special dishes that always make an appearance?
Also, I’d love to hear what you are having for your thanksgiving meal? I’m planning on helping my mom out in the kitchen. And, I’m also making a pie of some sort to add to our desert table selection (which is always way too big!) I’m thinking about making this one, or maybe something along these lines, or this one is always a winner. I’ll let you know how that turns out.
