National Stationery Show

The stationery world is a vast one, folks. Every couple of months, 1canoe2 travels to NYC to attend various trade shows that attract buyers from all over the world. You’ve most likely seen pictures from these shows on Carrie’s Instagram or on the 1canoe2 Facebook page, but we thought we’d give you a brief overview of our latest trip so you can see what these shows are all about!

This past week, 6 gals from the 1canoe2 crew were in NYC for the National Stationery Show (NSS). Shop owners from all over the world attend NSS so they may order products to sell in their stores. They walk through aisles and aisles of booths, picking and choosing from today’s best stationery lines.

So here’s how it works. The first order of business once getting to NYC is setting up our booth. We spend two full days painting the walls, screwing in shelving and arranging products. It is a lot of work. A lot. But the finished booth is always well worth it.

And the finished booth…drum roll, please…

Ta daaa! (Click the photo for a larger view). We decorate the booth a little differently each year, and this year we chose to go with big, bold and beautiful flower cut outs that Carrie painted. In an attempt to bring part of our studio to the booth, we set up a work desk right in the middle of the booth that mimics Carrie’s actual work space – complete with color palettes, pens, brushes and a plastic Shakespeare’s cup.

Once the booth is done, it’s basically a mini store-front for buyers to browse our products. The show lasts 3.5 days and it’s a constant whirlwind of taking orders! Those orders are sent to our wonderful shipping folks back at the barn, where products are immediately shipped to their new homes. We have products in everything from giant stores, like Anthropologie, to the brilliant little shops, like Shindig Paperie.

In addition to showing off a new booth design each time, these shows are where we debut our new products! This year we rolled out 16 new cards, 3 new calendar designs and 9 art prints (all of which are now on our website). NSS also marked the first public appearance for our brand new planners! We were quietly taking bets on which of the three designs would generate the most excitement. You can check out all three planner designs here…can you guess which one did the best?

So that’s it! When the show is over, we tear everything down, pack it up in a giant crate and wait until the next show where we will do it all again. To check out more photos from the show, including thousands of other beautiful booths and products, search #NSS2015 on Instagram!

National Stationery Show 2013

I know it has been a little quiet here on the blog the past week or so. We have been busy! We got home on Thursday from New York City, where we spent the week at the National Stationery Show. This was our third year exhibiting at the show, and we couldn’t be more pleased and excited with how it went.

First of all, a big huge thanks to ALL of you who stopped by our booth in person and showered us with kindness and compliments. Really. We feel so blessed, and a little overwhelmed with the amount of hugs and praise and admiration that we received. We have the BEST customers and admirers. We’re not really sure what to say. Thank you.

This year we doubled the size of our booth, which was a little intimidating to think about at first, but it was a good move. We loved our new location, and everything just seemed to come together perfectly. Of course, we had everything planned out before hand – shelves and tables built and prints framed and pretty things for the table – but it’s always kind of hard to picture it exactly until we actually put all the pieces together on site. I think it came together well! I will tell you, it is intensely satisfying to see all of the hard work that we put in over the course of the last few months together in one place, looking so good. That hard work is SO worth it.

We were excited to debut several new products at this show, which I’ll be sure to tell you about in more detail later. This is one of our new calendars for 2014 – the Pieces and Patterns Calendar. It’s 9×12, and I think it would look fantastic on your wall!

Here’s another new calendar for 2014. We’re just calling this one the Oversized Calendar, because that is exactly what it is! It seemed to attract a lot of attention this week, and we were completely honored when we learned that it won a best new product award!

How about that?! Seriously.

So much to be thankful for. And, really, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

We definitely worked hard this week, but we had a lot of fun too. It is always great to catch up with our fellow exhibitors and friends that we have made here over the last couple of years, and see what everyone has been up to. We spent some time roaming around the city, hit up several of our favorite spots, and explored some new ones. We had a couple of amazing meals with some great friends, and we even squeezed in a Mets game! (Thanks Tiffany!)

We love visiting New York, but we are definitely glad to be home, and glad to see trees and grass, and ready to get back to our regular schedules.  There’s a big stack of orders for us to tackle, and many new things on the horizon. But, I’m kind of already looking forward to our next trip to the city!

To Kim, Tiffany, and Bizzie – THANK YOU so much for all that you did for us while we were in town. We COULD NOT have done it without you! Thanks for painting walls, hammering in lots of tiny little nails, running out to get lunch, taking orders, chatting with customers, exploring the city with us, telling us funny stories, and keeping us laughing. It is great to have friends in far away places! We loved seeing you and spending time with you. Y’all are the BEST!

National Stationery Show :: We Did It!

We’re back home from New York safe and sound!  The Stationery Show was a huge success.  We took lots of orders and made a ton of contacts.  We will have so much to share with you in the near future, but for now, here’s how our week went…

We showed up at the Javits Center on Saturday morning relieved to find our big huge crate still in one piece waiting for us in our booth space.  We spent most of the day unloading it, setting up the walls, and arranging everything to look *just right*.  We added an extra wall for this show, and it worked out great.  Thanks Dad!

Several of our products made their debut at the this week, including our 2013 calendar, and four new notepads.  They got great reviews!  Look for them at one of our retailers and in our online shop real soon!

The show lasted Sunday through noon on Wednesday.  At least two of us were in the booth at all times during the show answering questions, taking orders, and chatting with everyone who stopped by.  It is a lot of fun sharing our story and what we do with everyone who’s interested, but let me tell you, at the end of every day we were exhausted!

When the show wrapped up on Wednesday no one wasted any time in starting to pack up.

In just a couple of hours the Javits looked like this.

For the second time we’ve been lucky enough to find a place to stay that’s just a couple of blocks from the Javits Center.  We rented a small (very small) apartment for the week, which was great.  Being so close made it easy to relax for an hour or so at the end of each day before heading out into the city for the evening.

During the course of the week we visited a couple of retail stores who carry our products.

Cursive is a tiny little stationery and gift shop right in the big bustling hub of the city – Grand Central Station.  There is also a second location inside the beautiful home decorating store ABC Carpet and Home.  1canoe2 will be available in both locations very soon!

We also stopped by the Anthropologie store in Rockefeller Center and look what we spotted on the shelves!!  Our Recipe Binder!  I have to say, it was quite a thrill.  Anthropologie is one of our favorite stores, and to see something that WE MADE on the shelf was so satisfying.

New York is obviously a different world than where we live, but that’s what makes it fun!  Some other highlights included…

Eating.  There’s so much amazing food to eat in New York it can be overwhelming.  We went to the Shake Shack  in Madison Square Park  for burgers, fries and milkshakes.  We had some mouthwatering bar-b-que at Southern Hospitality.  Dos Cominos  in SoHo  served us some fresh guacamole and tacos.  We had a real authentic Italian experience in the lower east side at Lanzas.  We walked a couple blocks from our apartment to  Five Napkin Burger, which  never disappoints.  And, of course, we hit up the Magnolia Bakery for their famous cupcakes.  Yum.

We also hung out with our buddies Ted and Samae from MPix, who we’ve done some design work for.  They treated us to dinner (thanks guys!) at Birreria, the rooftop restraunt at Mario Batali’s Eataly.  So. Good.

It was a whirlwind of a trip!  The crazy thing is, we’ll be doing it again in August when we go back for the New York International Gift Fair.  That will be here before we know it.

Workin’ It

Day three of the stationery show is in the books. We’ve had quite the week! It’s been so fun catching up with our buyers. I have to say, we get to work with some GREAT shop owners. The best.

For example, the girls from Social Graces in Nashville came bearing gifts! Some amazing chocolate, handcrafted in Tennessee. Yum.

We’ve also made a lot of new contacts and we are pleased to say that 1canoe2 will be available in many more stores around the country! More on that later.

We’ve also been catching some sights around the city…

And eating at good restaurants.

Tomorrow’s the last day of the show. We hope to wrap everything up and still have a little time to have a last hurrah in the city before we board our plane home on Thursday.

Shakin’ It Up

It was a long day of set-up, but everything went together nicely. Our booth is lookin’ good! We left the Javits Center exhausted…

so we headed on down to Madison Square Park and treated ourselves to a little Shake Shack.

Mmmmmmm…Shake Shack, we love you.

Hello Manhattan!

We’re back in the big city! It’s the National Stationery Show, and we’re ready to tear it up. Seriously. We’ve been scrambling the past several weeks to get things ready, and now it’s game time.

We shipped our big crate containing our display last week. It will be waiting in the Javits Center when we get there tomorrow morning for a long day of set up.

We’ve also been painting signs…

Designing a fancy new catalog for our wholesale customers…

And printing lots of new card designs up until the very last minute.

We’re ready for a great week at the stationery show, and for some fun in the city! Who knows who we might meet!
